The North Dakota Natural Resources Trust (Trust) was created under the Garrison Diversion Reformulation Act of 1986 as the North Dakota Wetlands Trust. The mission of the Trust was to preserve, restore, manage and enhance wetlands and associated wildlife habitat in the state of North Dakota. In 2000 that mission was broadened to include grassland conservation and riparian areas with the passage of the Dakota Water Resources Act. To ensure its success, Congress originally authorized $13.2 million in federal and state funding. An additional $25 million will be added to this funding as part of the Dakota Water Resources Act of 2000. Only the interest from trust funds can be spent.
